Hugo Kaulen

Hugo Kaulen ( born October 28, 1869 in Ronsdorf; † July 9, 1954 in Wuppertal) was, like his son, Dr. Hugo Kaulen Jr. ( 1900-1944 ), a German balloonist.

Life

Kaulen reached 1913 world records ( distance and duration) in ballooning. His time had officially record inventory until 1976. Together with Krefft and Alfred Schmitz he went from 13 to December 17, 1913 2828 km in 87 hours in the balloon " Duisburg " (1680 m³) from Bitterfeld to Kirgischan / Myssi in the government of Perm ( Urals / Russia). The orientation was poorly for a school atlas. After landing, they needed three days in the dog sled to the nearest larger settlement. The balloonists were arrested on charges of espionage, taken to Moscow and released only after diplomatic negotiations.

Hugo Kaulen took three times part of the Gordon Bennett Cup. Other races he undertook, inter alia, Alexander Dahl in the United States. His name is also mentioned in connection with the Bonn balloon race in 1912.

Hugo Kaulen was a member of the Lower Rhine Society of Air Navigation ( NVFL ) and in 1953 he became an honorary member of the German Aero Club
