Hugo Rheinhold

Wolfgang Hugo Rheinhold ( born March 26, 1853 in Upper Lahnstein, † October 2, 1900 in Berlin) was a German sculptor. His most famous work is the Monkey with Skull.

Life

Hugo Rheinhold first attended school in Koblenz. At the age of 21, he went as a dealer in the USA, where he lived from 1874 to 1879 in San Francisco; in 1879 he moved to Hamburg. The following year he married his childhood sweetheart Emma Levy from Cologne, but in 1882, after one and a half years of marriage, died. Emma's death changed the Rhine holds life. He sold his business and moved to Berlin to study at the Friedrich- Wilhelms University (now Humboldt University of Berlin) philosophy. In 1886 he was a pupil of the sculptor Ernst Herter and Max Kruse, before he officially enrolled as a student at the Berlin Academy of Arts ( 1888-1892 ).

Works

Rheinhold produced a series of acclaimed works in a short period of life. These include the " reader monks ", a bust of the socialist August Bebel, and " On the way " ( 1896). Rheinhold kept his Jewish heritage, worked in the German - Jewish community covenant and created the sculpture " The Fighter " as a protest against anti-Semitism. Rheinhold 's last work " fountain grotto with two water deities " was issued shortly before his death in 1900. Today, his most famous work is the Monkey with Skull.
