Hugo Schiff

Hugo ( Ugo) Schiff ( born April 26, 1834 in Frankfurt am Main, † September 8, 1915 in Florence) was a famous German chemist. He is a brother of the physiologist Moritz ship.

Curriculum vitae

Hugo Schiff studied at Göttingen under Friedrich Wöhler chemistry. He has a doctorate in 1857 with a thesis about some naphthyl and phenyl derivatives.

In 1863 he went to Italy, first to Pisa ( 1863-1864 ), where he focused on aldehydes and follow named him imines ( Schiff bases) and the Aldehydnachweis discovered by the Schiff test named after him.

From 1864 to 1876 he lived in Florence, where he Gazzetta Chimica Italiana founded the Stanislao Cannizzaro together with, for 120 years the leading Italian chemistry journal.

In 1877 he became professor of chemistry in Turin, but returned in 1879 returned to Florence, where he founded the Institute of Chemistry at the University of Florence. In 1905 he isolated the diphenylketene the first ketene. He also worked on amino acids and the biuret reaction. Exists at the University of Florence today for the Hugo ship International Storehouse.
