In an inscription on the naos of the Temple of Edfu the beginning of the rebels rule is the time after completion of the double gate in the 16th year of reign ( 206/205 BC) of Ptolemy IV dated. Harwennefer is also known mainly from demotic documents. The oldest dated November 11, 205 BC Harwennefer, in Thebes rebelled against the rule of Ptolemy IV, Ptolemy IV used for existing in this period various domestic problems. For the year 217 BC a rebellion is attested in northern Egypt, which resulted in a guerrilla war that lasted for years. For these riots the rebellion stirred at Thebes.

In Pathyris, south of Thebes, is Harwennefer with date September 27 is 204 BC. In the following years he reigned probably over large areas of the Thebaid. A Greek inscription in abydenischen mortuary temple of Seti I. witnessed the fifth year of reign ( about 201 BC) of Harwennefer and with it, that this city was at least temporarily in the hands of him. He was officially recognized by the Amunpriestern in Thebes as king. All documents this time from Thebes mention only these rulers and ignore Ptolemy IV

The last time Harwennefer is occupied 199 BC in Theban papyri of 9 July and 7 August of the year. Around the same time was made by the Ptolemaic army, the siege of Abydos. Whether Harwennefer during this siege lingered in Abydos, is not busy, maybe he was killed in the siege battles, because a short time later Anchwennefer was crowned in Thebes as the new Pharaoh. A construction of Harwennefer is not known what has possibly to do with the fact that he was in a constant battle with the forces of Ptolemy IV.
