The Humboldtianidae are a family from the suborder of terrestrial snails ( gastropod ). Its distribution area is limited to Central America and southern North America. Some members of the family tend to regress the housing. The oldest representative of the family date back to the late Eocene ( Paleogene ) Overall, the family includes about 50 species.

Features

The housings are variable in size, color and color. The main representatives are up more than 50 mm in size, the smallest only about 12 mm. In the subfamily Humboldtianidae they are more globose to flattened oval mouth. The shell is relatively thin. Often spiral strips, the sculpture is designed to be relatively low. The representatives of the subfamily Bunnyinae other hand, have the tendency to regression of the case (so-called Vitrinisierung ). The adults can not fully retract into the housing itself. The mouth is relatively large and oval. It is also very thin and transparent. There are four original love arrow bags available, but in some species can be reduced to one, the rest are available only as a rudiment. In other species, the bags can be different sizes.
