Humpata

Humpata is a district ( Municipio ) in the Angolan province of Huíla, near the provincial capital Lubango. It is located in 1020 meters altitude on the Humpata plateau between the Serra da Munda in the north and the Serra da Chela in the south at the descending of the Serra de Chela Kunene inflow Kakulovar ( Caculevar ).

History

Humpata was founded in 1880 by Boer settlers ( Dorsland trekkers ) from South Africa and Portuguese colonists from Moçâmedes instead of a Humbe - village, after the Boers had driven the Humbe. The Portuguese colonial administration was the establishment in 1881 the name São Januário. Originally led by Jacobus Frederik Botha about 270 Boers operated crops, livestock and hunting. Some moved on and founded in 1885 to Grootfontein in South Africa, the Republic of Upingtonia. Those remaining first paid no taxes to the Portuguese government, which conceded them to independently manage and Portuguese citizenship. Botha was magistrate and commander of the settlement. Botha's daughter married the Portuguese officer Artur de Paiva, and the Boers supported him until 1898 with the defeat of three Humbe revolts. Even with the defeat of the Cuamato ( Kwamato ) and the " pacification " of the province of Cunene helped the Boers from Humpata to 1906 the Portuguese colonial power. Disappointed that they did not allow Portugal to teach their children in Afrikaans, left in 1928, most Buren ( 1800-1900 people) Humpata and settled in New South Africa.

With the independence of Angola in 1975, the city reverted to its old name Humpata and is now about 31,000 inhabitants.

Humpata is the seat of an eponymous district ( Municipio ) in the province of Huíla. The district has 82 560 inhabitants (estimated 2013) on an area of 1,261 km ².
