Húnaflói

Húnaflói is a wide bay in the north- west of Iceland between the western fjords and the Skagi Peninsula.

Name

Huni in Icelandic means young polar bear, Flói means bay. So does the name Húnaflói Bay of young polar bears. This is explained by the fact that here, as indeed are driven at other locations in northern Iceland, Polar bears sometimes with the drifting ice of Greenland and put their efforts here.

This bay bifurcates to the west in the Steingrímsfjörður, Bjarnarfjörður, Kollafjörður and Bitrufjörður belonging to the West Fjords.

Eastwards join Hrútafjörður and Miðfjörður where the small settlement Laugarbakki and 600 Einwohnerort Hvammstangi are.

The southern coast of the Húnafjörður is determined by Þingeyrasandur that separates the lagoon from the Hóp Húnaflói.
