Hungarian Greek Catholic Church

The Hungarian Greek Catholic Church is a Uniate with the Roman Catholic Church church community, which constitutes part of the Ruthenian Greek Catholic Church. Like all Catholics, so also recognize the faithful of the Hungarian Greek Catholic Church the Pope as their spiritual leader.

History

For Hungarian Greek Catholic Church originally belonged to Ukrainian and Romanian native speakers who were probably Magyarised. In the 18th century a part of this group began to be interested in the use of the Hungarian language in the liturgy, but this was rejected by the appropriate ecclesiastical authorities. So there was since 1795 a Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, who still should follow other liturgical books in the 19th century, although applied, but were not approved. In the Holy Year 1900, a group of believers on a pilgrimage to Rome, where she Pope Leo XIII. to the approval of their liturgy and the establishment of a separate diocese asked for them. But only with Pope Pius X was her wish come true, and it came on 18 June 1912 establishing the diocese of Hajdúdorog, which was responsible for 162 municipalities. However, the establishment did not bring the desired success actually, but should also be celebrated in the future, the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, that the Mass in the Greek language. A decision has not been implemented due to the outbreak of the First World War. Following the war, a Exarchate for the remaining Ruthenians in Hungary was built, but which has been well served by the Exarch of the Hungarian Greek Catholic Church.

Even today resides an Exarch of the Hungarian Greek Catholic Church in Nyíregyháza, whose diocese is connected to the Ruthenian Apostolic Exarchate of Miskolc, as his manager, he is official. The parish extends today from all over Hungary.

The Hungarian Greek Catholic Church has about 300,000 members today.
