HVDC Italy–Corsica–Sardinia

The SACOI ( HVDC connection Sardinia - Corsica - Italy) is one of the oldest high-voltage DC transmission system in the world and one of the few that is not a pure two-point connection, because it is used to connect the power grids of Sardinia and Corsica with that of Italy and thus of continental Europe.

History

The SACOI went in 1965 as a monopolar connection with mercury vapor rectifiers as valves in operation and consists of five sections:

  • Overhead line section of 50 km length on the Italian mainland
  • Seekabelabschnitt of 103 km between Italy and Corsica
  • Overhead line section of 167 km in length in Corsica
  • Seekabelabschnitt of 15 km between Corsica and Sardinia
  • Overhead line section of 87 km in length in Sardinia

The transfer of power was originally 200 MW at a voltage of 200 kV. The converter stations are located on the Italian mainland in Suvereto at 43 ° 3 ' 10 "N, 10 ° 41 ' 42" O43.05277777777810.695 in Corsica Lucciana at 42 ° 31 ' 40 "N, 9 ° 26' 59" O42. 5277777777789.4497222222222, in Sardinia in Codrongianos at 40 ° 39 ' 7 " N, 8 ° 42 ' 48" O40.6519444444448.7133333333333.

In the 1970er/1980er years SACOI was often extended period of time because of the overhead line section in Corsica often was the target of terrorist attacks.

1992 second pole was taken with a transmission capacity of 300 MW at a voltage of 200 kV in operation. At the same time, the mercury vapor rectifier of the first pole were replaced by thyristors. In the course of this action the converter station was relocated on the Italian mainland of San Dalmazio to Suvereto.
