Hwarang-Do

Hwarang -Do ( Kor. 화랑도 ) is a modern Korean martial art. Your name consists of the name of an organization of the Silla Kingdom ( Hwarang ), which has worked around the 3rd century, and the word Do, which means as much as " spiritual path ".

Hwarang -do goes back to Lee Joo- Bang Lee and his brother Joo -sang. These have first learned Hapkido and have their own reportedly then informed by a Korean monk named Sonan Dosa in the ancient Korean martial arts of the Hwarang. However, the details of their studies at Sonan Dosa are unproven.

There is some debate among historians whether the Hwarang were really a military or militant organization. These writes Gu Hyosung in his thesis aggression, nationalism and martial arts in East Asia:

" Only a few military historian and conservative nationalist scholars have argued in favor of nationalism that Hwarang was a military organization of the young nobles. Most historians believe, however, that Hwarang has been a religious organization that has practiced a variety of physical culture, of which martial art was a part. Unfortunately, nothing has been handed down from it. "
