Spanish bluebells ( Hyacinthoides hispanica)

The Spanish bluebell ( Hyacinthoides hispanica ) is a plant of the genus Hyacinthoides ( Hyacinthoides ) in the family of asparagus plants ( Asparagaceae ).

Features

The racemose inflorescence is allseitswendig. The flowers are odorless. Upper flowers are more or less upright, lower stalked to about 2 inches long and projecting. The perianth is bell-shaped and wide blue, white or pink. The outer stamens are attached in the lower third of the perigone and as long as the inner ones. The anthers are blue.

It blooms in May, sometimes it starts in April.

The natural range of the Spanish hare bell is northwest Africa, Western Spain and Portugal. Here is the type found in woods and thickets. In southern, western and central Europe, they became naturalized.

Use

This type is used in scattered groups of trees as an ornamental plant and as a cut flower. It is in culture since 1601.

System

The English botanist Philip Miller described the species in 1768 under the taxon Scilla hispanica. The German botanist Werner Rothmaler she moved in 1944 under the currently valid taxon Hyacinthoides hispanica, along with other species of the genus Blue star (Scilla ) in a new genus of bluebells ( Hyacinthoides ). Other synonyms for the type Endymion campanulatus ( Aiton ) Willk. Scilla campanulata and Aiton.

Others

The Spanish bluebell forms with the Atlantic bluebells form a rich and heavy bastard Hyacinthoides hispanica identifiable × Hyacinthoides non-scripta Hyacinthoides × = massartiana Geerinck (syn. Hyacinthoides × variabilis PDSell ). Cultured and feral plants usually go back to that bastard.
