The Magnificent Stonecrop ( Hylotelephium spectabile ) is a plant of the genus Hylotelephium.

Features

The Magnificent stonecrop is a perennial herbaceous plant that is succulent, has a Knollenwurzelrhizom and reaches stature heights of 30 to 50 centimeters. The mostly opposite or three whorls arranged leaves are frosted blue, simple and at the base more or less thickness taper; they have a length of 2.5 to 10 and a width of 0.8 to 5 cm. The leaf margin is smooth or serrated sharp upward. Stipules absent.

The Vielblütige, zymöse inflorescence is about 7 to 11 cm wide. The hermaphroditic, have a radial symmetry flower diameter of about 1 cm and usually fünfzählig. The sepals are about 1 cm long. The petals are (rarely 5) usually 6 to 8.5 millimeters long. There are two circuits 6 to 8 mm long stamens, which are significantly longer than the petals. The anthers are purple. The free carpels are about 3 mm long. The stylus is about 1.2 mm long. This selbstfertile species is pollinated by insects. The flowering period extends from August to October.

There shall be set upright follicles, which ripen from September to October. The seeds are winged short.

Systematics and distribution

The Magnificent Stonecrop comes in Northeast China and Korea before on rock and gravel hallways.

The first description Sedum spectabile as was done in 1866 by Alexandre Boreau. In 1977, this type of Hideaki Ohba, in Bot Mag 90: 46, Tokyo, scoring in the new genus about 33 species found Hylotelephium.

Use

The Magnificent Stonecrop is often used as an ornamental plant in perennial beds and borders, cut flower and bees as a forage crop. It was introduced in the mid-1860s to France. In 1868 the plant was frequently passed by the wrong name Sedum fabaria, England and Germany and brought about nurseries in the trade. There are many varieties.
