Hyperoliidae

Heterixalus variabilis

Ried frogs ( Hyperoliidae ) are smaller, often very colorful and eye-catching patterned Anura, which occur in sub-Saharan Africa and on islands in the Indian Ocean. Most species live on plants above the ground and like the tree frogs in the broader sense ( Hylidae ) with adhesive discs on the fingers and toes, with which they can climb excellent. Only the genus Kassina is considered ground -dwelling. The tadpoles of frogs Ried fall mostly on by large tail fins. The genus is endemic to Madagascar Heterixalus, Tachycnemis occurs only in the Seychelles.

Taxonomy

In previous classifications some genera of reed frogs nor were attributed to the rudder frogs ( Rhacophoridae ). Other authors included the rudder frogs as a subfamily of the reed frogs. For recent reviews separate from the existing genus Leptopelis of the Ried frogs and have their subfamily Leptopelinae the long finger frogs ( Arthroleptidae ) to. Currently, 18 genera ( including several monotypic ) differed with more than 200 species, in particular in the far most species-rich genus Hyperolius still taxonomic questions remain unanswered.
