Hypsugo

Hypsugo is a bat species from the family of Myotis bats ( Vespertilionidae ). It was only recently separated from the genus of Pipistrelle bats ( Pipistrellus ) and comprises around 15 species, of which one lives, the Alps bat ( Hypsugo savii ) in Europe.

General

The animals of this genus are rather small, its body length is about 40 to 60 millimeters. Her head is characterized by the short, wide snout and also short ears. The staining of the dense fur varies from beige to dark brown.

These bats are widespread in Eurasia, Africa and North America. They live in a wide variety of habitats, from deserts to rainforests. As she sleeps prefer columns in homes, caves or hollow tree trunks. They are considered skilful pilots who primarily capture their food, mainly insects in flight.

The types

We distinguish 15 types:

  • Hypsugo anchietai is located in the central Africa.
  • Hypsugo anthonyi inhabited a small area in northern Myanmar. Due to the destruction of their habitat it is considered highly threatened ( critically endangered ).
  • Hypsugo arabicus is known only from Oman.
  • Hypsugo ariel lives in Israel, Egypt, Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
  • Hypsugo cadornae is distributed from India to Thailand.
  • Hypsugo eisentrauti lives in middle Africa.
  • Hypsugo hesperus is native to western North America.
  • Hypsugo imbricatus lives in the Philippines and Indonesia.
  • Hypsugo inexpectatus is spread over the central Africa.
  • Hypsugo joffrei lives only in Myanmar. This species is highly threatened ( critically endangered ).
  • Hypsugo kitcheneri is endemic to Borneo.
  • Hypsugo lophurus lives in southern Myanmar and Thailand.
  • Hypsugo musciculus is spread over the central Africa.
  • Hypsugo pulveratus living in southern China and Thailand.
  • The Alps bat ( Hypsugo savii ) inhabited large parts of Eurasia and North Africa.
  • Hypsugo stenopterus lives in Southeast Asia.
