I Gusti Ngurah Rai

I Gusti Ngurah Rai ( born January 30, 1917 in Desa Carangsari, kabupaten Badung, Bali, † November 20, 1946, Marga, Tabanan ) is a National Hero of Indonesia.

Life

Ngurah Rai was lieutenant colonel of the Indonesian armed forces in the struggle for independence against the Dutch army.

Under his command were Balinese forces in the struggle for independence against the Dutch, until it came to a battle, in which his force was inferior from the beginning. The ritual self-sacrifice in the fight in a hopeless situation ( Puputan Indonesian) based on an ancient tradition. Along with it came in this battle of Marga 1371 combatants killed.

After I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport of Bali, Bandar Udara Internasional Ngurah Rai is named.
