3-isobutyl -1 -methylxanthine, IBMX for short, is a heterocyclic compound selected from the group of xanthine derivatives and purine alkaloids, the strong similarity to caffeine.

Properties and Uses

IBMX is a colorless solid, which in ethanol, DMSO and water at basic pH well in pure water dissolves poorly. The substance decomposes on heating or in solution and must therefore at temperatures below 5 ° C are stored. IBMX used in biology for the detection of the phosphodiesterase (PDE ), since the activity of the cAMP -PDE is inhibited by the molecule.

Safety

IBMX is combustible, with carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen. In 7-10 days old rats, the administration of IBMX produced a reduction in learning ability and behavioral problems. In mice, the substance to be toxic; the LD50 value was intraperitoneal consumption at 44 mg / kg body weight. It has thus for mice four times as large as the related toxicity caffeine ( 168 mg / kg).
