Ibrahim Ahmad

Ibrahim Ahmed or Ibrahîm Ehmed, (* 1914 in Sulaymaniyah, † 2000), was a Kurdish writer, novelist and translator. He studied law at the University of Baghdad in 1937 and graduated from it. From 1942 to 1944 he was a judge in Erbil and Halabja. In 1939 he founded with Alaeddin Sajadi the Kurdish magazine Gelawêj ( The Morning Star = Venus). Ahmed was publisher and editor in chief. Gelawêj appeared until 1949.

Political career

During this time he was also politically active, so that in 1944 he was Chairman of the Komeley Jiyanewey Kurd in the region of Sulaymaniyah and later of the whole Kurdish Iraq. When the Komeley Jiyanewey Kurd 1945 changed its name to Kurdish Democratic Party, Ahmed was the secretary of the party in Iraqi Kurdistan. He brought the party newspaper ( The Voice of Truth ) Remove the magazine dengue Rasti. 1947 Ahmed was a member of the Party Kurdish Democratic Party under the leadership of Mustafa Barzani. 1949 Ahmed was sentenced to two years in prison in Baghdad and two years in prison in Kirkuk. From 1949 to 1956, Ahmad was the chief editor of the magazine KDP Rizgari (liberation), which was later renamed in XEBAT ( fight ). 1956 Ibrahim Ahmed was even Secretary General of the KDP. However, it came in 1964 to tensions within the Politburo of the KDP. On the one side were the supporters of Mustafa Barzani and on the other those of Ibrahim Ahmed and Celal Talabani. Barzani appointed a new Politburo and the people around Ibrahim Ahmed split from the KDP and founded in 1975 in Europe, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan. After 1975, Ahmed lived as a political refugee in England. His daughter Herro Khan is the wife of Celal Talabani.

Literary creation

Ibrahim Ahmed started in 1933 with the writing. His most important work Jani Gel ( The suffering of the people) was published in 1956 and dealt with the Algerian War of Independence against France. He compared the situation in this novel the Algerians with the Kurds. The work was translated into Persian in 1980 and 1994 in French and Turkish.
