ICalendar is a data format for exchanging calendar content that has been standardized in RFC 5545.

The format is based on vCalendar and was originally defined in RFC 2445 November 1998. At the same time, the first four letters of his name were introduced as an abbreviation. iCal is also the name of the corresponding application program from Mac OS X and an associated file name extension under this operating system by default. ics is the file name extension for other operating systems. The file name extensions iFBf and ifb are provided for information when you are free or busy.

ICalendar is not limited to the exchange of files or to a particular network protocol. The Standard defines rather fundamentally the Internet Media Type text / calendar for almost any embedding.

So simple websites can for example be used to distribute iCalendar appointments by an event and to publish busy times, or WebDAV server for synchronizing appointments. It is also possible, appointments in the Personal Area Network - exchange between PDAs or mobile phones - about using IrDA or Bluetooth. With the help of iCalendar, it is also possible to use calendar information between multiple applications.

RFC 5546 defines an iCalendar building the iTIP protocol for interoperability in groups at the application layer. RFC 6047 defines turn on iTIP building iMIP to exchange using Simple Mail Transfer Protocol.

Responsible was the Working Group Calsify the Internet Engineering Task Force.
