Ie-jima

Ie- jima or Ie -shima (Japanese伊 江 岛) is a Japanese island northwest off the coast of Motobu Peninsula in northern Okinawa. It belongs to the Ryukyu Islands.

On the 22.77 km ² island of the same village Ie ( 4536 inhabitants) is the Iejima airport. Among its management area, however, still belongs to the nearby atoll Nakanosu. The highest elevation is the Gusuku -yama (城 山) with 172.2 m.

On it were several Japanese air bases that were developed and used by the capture of the U.S. Air Force in 1945 to address from there against the other Japanese islands to the north. At that time the island was called in the Western media " Ie Shima ".
