IEEE 802.20

Under a Global Area Network (GAN ) is defined as a network which can connect to a plurality of unlimited geographical distances, wide area networks. This can be, for example, the interdependencies of the global locations of an international company. Often in a GAN satellite or fiber transmission is used.

The term is rarely used GAN compared to Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN). GAN is not the direct term for the Internet because it can theoretically sealed off several GAN and give independent, the Internet, however, a global networking without ( significant ) is subdivisions. So the Internet is a GAN, but not every GAN is called Internet.

As GAN also is the system operated by the telecommunications company Inmarsat infrastructure Inmarsat -M4, as well as Inmarsat BGAN ( Broadband Global Area Network ) which shall, however, except the common name little to do with the Global Area Network, since although they can transmit IP data, but this is a reality only in a higher layer and not by force.
