IEEE Fellow

IEEE Fellow is a special status members of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers ( IEEE). This honorary membership is awarded by the IEEE Board of Directors (Board of Directors ) to persons with exceptional services in a region of interest of the IEEE. The annual number of new appointments never exceeds one per thousand of the total voting Institute membership.

The membership status of Fellow was already in the predecessor organizations of the IEEE AIEE (from 1912) and the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE, 1914 ), awarded to individuals who have made outstanding contribution to a specific area. At that time it was possible to apply directly for the status of Fellow. However, the conditions and especially the public procurement directives changed over the years and only by direct suggestion of the Board of Directors was from 1938 ( IRE ) or 1952 ( AIEE ) is possible. With the merger of AIEE and IRE in 1963, the Fellows of the AIEE and IRE automatically received the status of " Fellow of the IEEE ."
