Ieng Thirith

Ieng Thirith ( born 1932 in the province of Battambang, Cambodia, Khieu Thirith as ) was Minister of Social Affairs of Democratic Kampuchea by the Khmer Rouge. She is since 1951 the wife of Ieng Sary, who was the reign of the Khmer Rouge foreign minister.

Life

She studied English literature at the University of Paris. Her sister Khieu Ponnary (1920-2003) was, until 1985, the wife of Pol Pot. On 12 November 2007 she was arrested along with her husband. Currently, a process is running against them before the Khmer Rouge Tribunal. On September 13, 2012, the Court of Thirith released. The reason there was to unfitness due to dementia. The defendant was in " near future " is no longer able to follow the process. The charges were not dropped.
