Ifakara, capital of Kilombero district in Tanzania, located in the valley of the Kilombero River, some 400 kilometers southwest of Dar es Salaam.

The town has about 46,000 inhabitants, suburbs included around 80,000. Ifakara is the administrative center of the Kilombero district and an important commercial center for the Kilombero Valley. Addition, there is a great place reference hospital (St. Francis Referral Hospital ), a training center for medical personnel and various non -governmental organizations. Since 2010, the St. Francis Referral Hospital Medical School (St. Francis University College of Health and Allied Sciences, SFUCHAS ). Mother University is the St. Augustine University in Mwanza.

Through an on-site here known health research ( Ifakara Health Institute - to 30 June 2008 Ifakara Health Research and Development Centre ) Ifakara has for decades been a center for internationally recognized research in the field of malaria and other tropical diseases. The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC supports the Health and Research Institute Ifakara Health Institute, IHI. It was founded as a field laboratory of the Swiss Tropical Institute in the 1940s and in 1991 transferred to the Tanzanian government. The Ifakara Health Institute is one of the winners of the Prince of Asturias Award in 2008 for International Cooperation.

Ifakara has a station on the TAZARA railway line linking Dar es Salaam with Zambia. Passenger trains run three times a week in each direction.

Since January 14, 2012 Ifakara being the bishop of the newly established Roman Catholic Diocese " Ifakara". First bishop is Salutaris Melchior Libena.
