Igor Frenkel

Igor Borisovich Frenkel ( born April 22, 1952 in Leningrad ) is a Russian -born American mathematician who deals with infinite-dimensional Lie algebras and representation theory.

Frenkel moved the USA in 1979, where he became in 1980 a doctorate at Howard Garland at Yale with a dissertation Orbital Theory for Affine Lie Algebras. After Lehrtägigkeit among others at Rutgers University, he is currently a professor at Yale.

Frenkel constructed with James Lepowsky and Arne Meurman the Monster vertex operator algebra, which provides a representation of the "monster" called finite simple group. With the help of Richard Borcherds succeeded the proof of "Moonlight " properties of the Monster group. With Garland and Gregg Zuckerman 1986 he found a connection with the cohomology of graded Lie algebras by Feigin and the BRST quantization of strings.

In 1986 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berkeley ( affine Lie algebras Beyond ).

His doctoral include Mikhail Khovanov and Pavel Etingof.
