Igor Ponomarev

Igor Maratowitsch Ponomarev (Russian Игорь Маратович Пономарёв; born June 6, 1965, in Leningrad, † October 30, 2006 in London) was a Russian diplomat.

Education and professional career

Ponomarev studied at the Leningrad State University and earned a degree in marine engineering there. He then worked at the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping as a Senior Surveyor. Later he was responsible for coordinating the cooperation with the International Maritime Organization. After he had been promoted to Head of Department of International Cooperation, he worked from 1999 to 2003 as Deputy Chief of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping. From 2001 to 2002 he was also Chairman of the International Association of Classification Societies. In 2003 he was appointed Permanent Representative of Russia to the International Maritime Organization and headed the Committee on Ship Design and Equipment.

Death

On 30 October 2006 Ponomariov suffered while attending an opera a heart attack, the consequences of which he died. According to the magazine Focus reported that the circumstances surrounding the death of Ponomariov were mysterious. On the one hand he wanted to meet two days later with Mario Scaramella, who was in contact with the two days later poisoned Alexander Litvinenko; on the other hand is said to have shown symptoms of thallium poisoning Ponomariov.
