Illubabor Province

Illubabor ( ኢሉባቦር of Oromo Illuu Baaboor ) was a province in south-western Ethiopia, on the border with Sudan.

The province was founded in the late 19th century after the conquest and incorporation of the area into the kingdom of Abyssinia. Their capital city was until 1978 Gore, then Metu was new capital. In addition to areas in the southern highlands that formed the core area of ​​the province, comprised Illubabor also Gambela, which geographically belongs to the Sudanese Plain. Gambela in 1987 separated as its own province of Illubabor. The eastern part of the historical Illubabor Gibe region.

With the reform of administrative divisions of Ethiopia after 1991 the area of Illubabor to the ethnically defined regions of Oromia, Gambela Region and the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples was divided.

A zone of Oromia region continues to bear the name Illubabor zone.
