Ilopango

Ilopango on the map of El Salvador

Ilopango is a local government district ( municipality ) about twelve kilometers east of San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador.

Location

The municipality is situated on the eroded stratovolcano of the same name, Ilopango. It is bordered to the north by Tonacatepeque and San Martín, on the east by the Lago de Ilopango, in the south of Santiago and Santo Tomás Texacuangos, and to the west by Soyapango. The municipality is divided into 4 Cantone and 31 Caseríos. The main river is the Río Las Cañas and the Río El cerro Amatitán.

In agriculture staple cereal and coffee are mainly grown. It is operated livestock in the areas of Domestic Cattle, horse, mule, domestic pig and poultry.

History

The crater lake Lago de Ilopango in the caldera of Lake Ilopango is known for its located there airbase. The trade unionist Miguel Marmol was born in Ilopango. He reported on the social problems, which resulted in the establishment of the Air Force base and the garrison. Marmol was involved in the organization of the protest of the fishermen of Ilopango. Aeropuerto de Ilopango

On 20 March 1923, the Ilopango airfield was opened as a military airfield.
