Imperial River is a river in the south of Chile in the Región de la Araucanía.

The Imperial River has a length of approximately 52 km. It is formed by the confluence of the Rio Cautín and the Río Huichahue. The Rio Cautín rises at 2,865 m high volcano Lonquimay. The two rivers merge southwest of Temuco in Nueva Imperial. Shortly thereafter, still flows to the Río Cholchol. Finally, the mighty river in Puerto Saavedra in the Pacific Ocean leads

History

The areas in the region of Río Imperial were conquered by the Spanish conquistadors never right. From 1604 to 1880 here governed the Mapuche virtually unrestricted. It was not until 1881, the area around Temuco could be repopulated.

On May 22, 1960, the port town of Puerto Saavedra was almost completely destroyed by a very strong earthquake.
