Indarjit Singh

Indarjit Singh, Baron Singh of Wimbledon, CBE ( born September 17, 1932 in Rawalpindi, British India), sometimes translated as Inderjit Singh, is a British journalist and presenter, a prominent British- Asian activist in Sikh and interfaith affairs. He is editor of the Sikh Messenger and programs known as the regular presenter of the Thought for the Day segment of BBC Radio 4s Today and BBC Radio 2s Pause for Thought. He also writes reviews for British and overseas newspapers and journals, including The Times, The Guardian and The Independent.

Life and career

Singh was born in 1932 in Rawalpindi and came to England in 1933. He studied engineering at Birmingham University.

Between 1955 and 1975 he worked in the mining industry for the National Coal Board, for the construction company Costain as Mine Manager in India and in local government in London.

Since 1993 he has been working for the Sikh community and is probably the most well known in the UK.

He served as a consultant or member of official bodies, including the Commission for Racial Equality and the Advisory Council on Race Relations of the Home Secretary. Singh is Director of the Network of Sikh Organisations ( UK) and represented the Sikh community regularly at public events such as the Commonwealth Service and the Remembrance Day Service at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London.

Prince Charles, the Anglican bishops and the Metropolitan Police consulted him. He is a prominent figure in the national and international inter-religious movement ( Interfaith Movement), patron ( patron ) of the World Congress of Faiths and a member of the ( Executive Committee ) of the Inter Faith Network UK. He was also a founding member and Co-Chair ( Co - Chair ). He was invited to the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton as a representative of the Sikh faith.

Membership in the House of Lords

Singh was appointed on 12 October 2011 for Life peer as Baron Singh of Wimbledon, of Wimbledon in the London Borough of Merton. The official launch took place on October 24, 2011 with the support of Helena Kennedy, Baroness Kennedy of The Shaws and George Leonard Carey. His maiden speech in the House of Lords he held on 1 December 2011.

Since 1976, Singh Consultant (Consultant ) of the Home Office is on the pastoral care at Sikhs in prisons. He was a member from 1981 until 1984, the Board of Visitors of Brixton Prison. From 1993 to 1998 he was a member of the Medical Ethics Committee of the British Medical Association. In 1984, Singh Magistrate ( Justice of the Peace ) of Wimbledon.

He is an honorary editor of the Sikh Messenger, Chairman ( Chair ) of the Sikh Council for Interfaith Relations and member of the Trusteeship Council ( trustee ) of the World Congress of Faiths. Singh is a member of the Religious Advisory Council UN Association, Inner Cities Religious Advisory Council of the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions, Gene Therapy Advisory Committee and Central Religious Advisory Committee of the BBC and Independent Broadcasting Authorithy.

He regularly lectures on race relations at the Maj University and other institutions in and outside the UK. In 1990 he held at the World Congress of Faiths, the Sir Francis Younghusband Memorial Lecture.

Honors

Singh was awarded the 1989 Templeton Award for his services to the spirituality. In 1991 he received the Inter- faith Medallion for services on religious broadcasting. In 2004 he was awarded, together with Benjamin Zephaniah and Peter Donohoe an honorary doctorate of Doctor of Laws from the University of Leicester. The University of Coventry gave him the honorary title of Honorary Doctor of Letters ( Hon DLIT ).

The People's Lord poll by BBC Radio 4, he came in second place behind Bob Geldof. Since June 1996 he has been Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE ) in the 2009 New Year Honours Singh was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

In 2006 he was inducted into the The Independent 's Good List. He is a member of the Institution of Mining Engineers. He is a Chartered Engineer and Master of Commerce ( MComm ).
