Indulis Emsis

Indulis Emsis ( born January 2, 1952 in Salacgrīva ) is a biologist, Latvian Green Party politician, former Prime Minister and Chairman of Parliament of Latvia.

Life

Emsis studied at the Latvian University biology and graduated in 1975 from the owner. In 1986 he received his doctorate in biology. From 1990 he worked as an environmental researcher. In 1990, he became one of the founders of the Green Party of Latvia and was in the 1990's environment minister, said he used particularly for the pollution of the Baltic Sea. He is currently one of the three chairmen of the Green Party.

On 9 March 2004 he was appointed Latvian Prime Minister, where he headed a minority government of the center-right. He was the world's first head of a green party. Emsis is despite his party affiliation as more conservative. On 2 December 2004 Aigars Kalvītis was elected as the new prime minister. On 7 November 2006 Emsis was elected parliamentary speaker of the Saeima. This office he resigned on 24 September 2007. His successor was Gundars Daudze.
