Infant Jesus of Prague

The Infant Jesus of Prague or Infant Jesus of Prague is one of the most famous miracle-working Jesus miraculous images worldwide. It is located in the Church of Our Lady Victorious ( Kostel Panny Marie Vítězné ) at the Carmelite monastery in the Czech capital Prague.

The statue

The statue is approximately 45 cm Renaissance wax figure and represents the baby Jesus at the age of about three years; they do is the work of an unknown artist of the 16th century.

History

Originally, the statue was owned by the Spanish aristocracy Manrique de Lara. When, in 1555, Maria Manrique de Lara married the High Chancellor of Bohemia, Vratislav of Pernstein, she received from her family the statue as a wedding gift. After the family of the lords of Pernštejna 1631 went out with her grandson Vratislav Eusebius of Pernštejna in the male line, whose aunt Polyxena of Lobkowicz handed the hitherto kept as a family treasure statue to the monastery of the Carmelites in Prague's Lesser Town. Since then it is kept in a silver shrine on the right side altar of the Church of Our Lady of Victories and revered as miraculous.

In the Thirty Years' War, the monastery was plundered by the Saxons and the figure of the Child Jesus to cut off the hands. 1637 prompted a Father Cyril the repair and made sure that the figure was re-erected. In the following years the Infant Jesus of Prague miraculous effects were accused of; in 1655 it was solemnly crowned by the then Auxiliary Bishop of Prague. This coronation is celebrated each year on the first Sunday in May.

Each year, about one million pilgrims to the holy image of the Infant Jesus of Prague.

Garments

It is an old tradition to give the Infant Jesus of Prague as a votive offering garments and clothe it. Currently, the wardrobe from around 100 different dresses from around the world. The oldest dress, a gift from King Ferdinand III. , Dates from the middle of the 17th century and is decorated with tinsel embroidery. As the most valuable is considered an occupied with diamonds, pearls and shells dress; it is one of around twenty features pieces which should have the Bohemian queen and Austrian Archduchess Maria Theresa embroidered by hand.

Depending on the church season or on special occasions the clothes of the character to be replaced.

Crown

Also the equipment of the Infant Jesus are some golden crowns. The first crown was 1654 Colonel Viscount of Bohemia Bernhard Ignatz Borzita Martinic make. More from the 18th century; they were made in Prague goldsmiths. The latest crown comes from Pope Benedict XVI. , Who honored the miraculous image during his visit on September 26, 2009 with it.
