Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir

Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir ( born December 31, 1954 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic politician of the Social Democratic Alliance. She was 2007-2009 Icelandic Foreign Minister.

Political career

Ingibjörg Sólrún began her political career in the party woman Alliance ( Samtök to kvennalista ). This she represented from 1982 to 1988 in the City Council of Reykjavík. From 1991 to 1994 you represented the party in the Althing.

On 13 June 1994 she was Mayor of Reykjavík, as the Independence Party had lost the majority in the city after twelve years. It was supported by a coalition of several parties. This office she held until February 1, 2003. This year, she ran again for the Icelandic parliament Althingi. Due to a controversy about the dual role as mayor and members of parliament and the related support of their coalition she resigned as mayor.

In 2005 she was chairman of the alliance, after the previous party leader Össur Skarphéðinsson narrowly defeated in a vote. After the 2007 General Election she was on 24 May 2007, Foreign Minister in the government of Geir Haarde Hilmar.

End of March 2009 it was replaced in office, the party chairman of Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir.
