Social Democratic Alliance

The Alliance ( Isl Samfylkingin ) is a social democratic party in Iceland.

History

The party was formed in 1999 by the merger of left-leaning parties, the People's Alliance ( Alþýðubandalag ), the Social Democratic Party Islands ( Alþýðuflokkurinn ), the wife Alliance ( Samtök to kvennalista ) and the People's Awakening ( Þjóðvaki ). The party officially foundation took place in 2000.

An attempt was made to unite all left parties Islands in order to have more impact against the liberal-conservative Independence Party can. This failed, however, when some of the members split off again and along with socialist and environmental groups, the Left-Green Movement ( Vinstrihreyfingin - grænt framboð ) founded.

After she agree strongest opposition party in the Icelandic parliament, the Althing several years, she participated in after the parliamentary election in 2007 as a junior partner of the Independence Party in the government. After protests from the population, this coalition failed in January 2009. Particular, the Independence Party to blame for the near- bankruptcy of Iceland and its three largest banks was given in view of the international financial and economic crisis.

Since then, the alliance led under Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir a left minority government together with the Left-Green Movement with the connivance of the Progressive Party. In early elections in April 2009, the coalition of the Alliance and the Greens won an absolute majority.

The alliance was with Ásta R. Jóhannesdóttir the President of Althingi.
