Ingmarsö

Ingmarsö is an island in the Österåkers kommun in the archipelago of Stockholm. The name, the island of the many lakes, which since ancient times to her were ( Inmar = Old Swedish for lake ). On the island are still many lakes. The best known are the Storträsk, Lillträsk, Bergmar and Maren. The westernmost part of the island consists of Brottö Peninsula. About a thousand years ago, sea level was about five meters higher than today. This means that the largest part of today Ingmarsö was under water. From the then existing, scattered small islands, the land mass known today was formed.

History

The first time Ingmarsö was mentioned in an old land registry book from the year 1539. The four farmers on the island had to pay taxes to Gustav I. Wasa and these were noted there. The control consisted among other things of a half-ton (now about 62 liters) cod. Another milestone in the island's history was when Charles VI. a personal finance system created. This means it was possible on the island, a boatswain (then a kind of military outposts ) to entertain with a boatswain Kate. In 1694 Kate was completed. This still exists today and is the Norrgårdenskolan ( German North Garden School ).

Life in the archipelago was poor and characterized by hard work, yet the population grew. In the 19th century began on the island of slashing and burning. This was done to gain more farmland to feed the growing population. In 1910, there were 223 people on the island, which were listed in the official register. Already in 1867 we began on the island to teach the children and in 1901 the school building was inaugurated. This was rebuilt and expanded, but the children were taught up to a maximum of seventh grade. The only shop on the island is almost as old as the school. It opened in 1887 and has since been in continuous operation. In 1998, this business took over the responsibility for the post on the island. From the year 1930, the tourism on the island to establish. There were many guests from Stockholm. These rented a either with locals or build their own houses.

Today

Today on Ingmarsö is about 150 people. There are 30 registered companies. Among other things, a boat yard, a boat builder school, a plastic factory, a taxi control center, a restaurant, the business in which a pharmacy, the Systembolaget, a post office and a bakery are.

The island is served by the two passenger lines Waxholmsbolaget and Cinderellabåtarna. There is also a water taxi. The official connections are all Ingmarsö Södra and Norra Ingmarsö.
