Ingolf Dahl

Ingolf Dahl ( born June 9, 1912 in Hamburg, † August 7, 1970 in Frutigen in Bern ) was an American composer, conductor and pianist with a German - Swedish parents.

Life

He studied from 1930 to 1932 at the Musikhochschule in Cologne composition with Philipp Jarnach and Hermann Abendroth. Against the background of the political situation in Germany at that time he felt threatened because of his Jewish ancestry, he emigrated to Switzerland in 1933 and continued his studies at the conservatory in Zurich at Volkmar Andreae and Walter Frey continued. Later he also studied composition with Nadia Boulanger in California.

When Orchestra of the Municipal Theatre in Zurich He gained experience as a conductor orchestra. In 1938 he settled in Los Angeles in the United States of America. From then on, his musical activities developed immensely, both as a composer for radio and film, as well as his activities as a conductor, piano soloist and lecturer.

In 1943 he received the U.S. citizenship.

In 1945 he became a member of the faculty of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and remained there until his death. He worked there for the areas of conducting, composition and music history. In addition to numerous others, the conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and the composer Frederick Myrow were among his pupils.

He also worked for Middlebury Composer's Conference in Vermont and taught from 1952 to 1955 at the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood.

In addition to his teaching, he was also conductor of the University of Southern California Symphony Orchestra by 1945 until 1958. Apart from the standard repertoire, he performed many contemporary works with the orchestra. So he programmed as new works by Aaron Copland, Lukas Foss, Charles Ives, Walter Piston and Carl Ruggles. From 1961 to 1962 he was on a concert tour in Germany. From 1964 to 1966 he led and conducted the Ojai Festival in California. In his last years he also conducted the orchestra of the Los Angeles Guild Opera.

Compared to the large size of its other activities, the oeuvre of the composer was not great. His style included some neoclassical elements.
