Inisheer

Inis Oírr (English Inisheer ) is an island on the west coast of Ireland in County Galway. The English name is a phonetic imitation of the Irish name. In addition there are two other Irish-language names for the island, Inis Thiar or Inis Oirthir. However Inis Oírr has been a change in the law in 2004, the only officially valid name. As part of the Aran Islands Inis Oírr is the smallest inhabited and easternmost island of the archipelago.

Geography

The area of ​​the island covers about ten square kilometers, the coast of County Clare is only about eight miles away. Most of the 247 residents (as of 2006) live in the northern part of the island, where there is also the port and an airfield located. Also in the north of the island is a medieval castle of the O'Briens from the 14th century. This stands on a hill and is surrounded by the remains of the ring forts Dun Formna. There is a small church ruins, Teampall Caomhán between the castle and the airport. It is dedicated to Saint Kevin of Glendalough and every year on July 13th goal of a pilgrimage. The church must then be respectively released from the quicksand, which has collected in it. The ruins of other churches can be found spread throughout the island.
