Inishmore

Inishmore ( Irish: Arainn, or Inis Mór Arainn Mhór; German: Big Island ) is an island off the west coast of Ireland. It belongs to the Aran Islands and is the largest and westernmost inhabited island of the archipelago in the Galway Bay. It is about 14 km long and 3 km wide and has 845 (as of 2011 ) inhabitants. The island is known as a stronghold of the Irish language - the Aran Islands are Gaeltacht area - and culture as well as for its wealth of prehistoric and early Christian sites.

Inishmore is a popular tourist destination. The island can be explored along hiking trails, bicycle or by horse. By ferry Inishmore Doolin and Rossaveel is connected in Connemara. In Killeany, south of Kilronan, Inishmore Aerodrome, the airport, the Aer Arann is several times daily from Inverin with propeller type aircraft Britten- Norman BN -2 Islander flies to. Capital of the island is Kilronan, where there is also the ferry port on the island. Kilronan offers accommodation in hotels and hostels, a small supermarket as well as dining facilities. Generally dominated on Inishmore of the day tourism. Especially the ferry from Doolin provides a fast connection between Inishmore and the tourist center at the Cliffs of Moher.

The island is the birthplace of the poet Máirtín Ó Direáin and writer Liam O'Flaherty. On its coast in the years to 565 St Brendan built his Curragh and his journey ( Navigatio Sancti Brendani ) be broken up over the Atlantic.

Buildings and Historical Sites

  • Ruins of Arkyn 's Castle, a castle from the 16th century
  • Dun Duchathair or Doocaher ( German: the black fort), a Promontory Fort with a so -called saddle lock
  • St. Eany 's Well and Church with the remains of the collapsed in the 19th century round tower of Turmartin.
  • Well Seacht dTeampaill ( German: the seven churches ), ruins of early Christian churches (St. Kieran 's Church, Kilchoran Church, Templebrecan, Templenaneeve - Church of the Saints, Temple Benen, MacDuagh Temple, Temple Soorney )
  • Beehive huts, including the Clochán na Carraige, the only complete on the Aran Islands
  • Dun Aonghasa, Eochla Dun, Dun Eoghanachta, famous Duns or stone forts
  • Some dolmens (eg Oghil Wedge tomb ) and stone crosses

On the island more than 30 prehistoric and early historical sites is registered.
