History

In 1315 received Cailean Mór ( Colin Campbell) wide lands in today's Unitary Authority Argyll and Bute. Ardchonnel Castle was probably built in the first half of the 13th century by members of the Clan Campbell. In the 15th century extensive rebuilding measures in the courtyard of the Castle have been made, although the floor area of approximately 25 m × 25 m remained almost unchanged. Until the late 15th century Ardchonnel Castle was the main stronghold of the clan, and was then replaced by the newly Inveraray Castle. Nevertheless, they continued to be used by members of allied clans MacLachlan. About the history of Ardchonnel Castle and when it was ultimately abandoned, little is known. It is only recorded that it was already in ruinous state in 1806.
