Innovation management

Innovation Management [- ˌ mænɪdʒmənt ] is the systematic planning, management and control of innovation in organizations. In contrast to creativity, which is engaged in the development of ideas, innovation management is also aimed at the exploitation of ideas and their implementation in commercially successful products or services.

The management of innovation is part of the implementation of the corporate strategy and may refer to products, services, production processes, organizational structures, management processes and esp. m. relate. While product innovation is usually aimed at better meeting the needs of customers, process innovations are mostly focused on improving the effectiveness and efficiency of processes.

The concept of innovation management is traditionally based primarily on in-plant and industrial processes. In economic research is the corporate innovation management aspects are present, however, increasingly studied and elaborated. Viewing objects such as open innovation, system innovation, innovation cluster or innovative regions.

Innovation process

This idea can be exploited to innovation, an innovation process must be running. There are various innovation process models, one of which is the Stage-Gate model. Broadly, there is the innovation process model of the following steps:

Christian Homburg and Harley Krohmer again distinguish the following four phases of the innovation process:

Factors

Innovation management is seen by many factors both within and outside an organization influences ( climate for innovation ). Among the most important factors include:

  • Industry, market segment and customer structure
  • Products, services and production technology
  • Corporate strategy
  • Corporate culture, motivation and teamwork
  • Research and Development
  • Quality management and other integrated management methods
  • Human resources management and collective bargaining provisions
  • Legal framework, including intellectual property rights
  • Cooperation with other companies in the value chain
  • Cooperation with scientific institutions (universities, research institutes)

Service innovation

The service innovation [dt. Service Innovation] is the development of a new service. The service development is in the innovation process at the same level as the product innovation, however, is characterized by several features. These result primarily from the intangibility of services as part of the value creation process on the one hand ( potential dimension ) as well as the integration of external factors for their production ( process dimension ) on the other.

Innovation Management as an external service

Innovation management is not just a purely internal company process, but often also binds with a external service that can make each different posts within the different process steps of a holistic innovation management system.

Fundamentally should be established, however, for every innovation process first a fundamental innovation strategy. Here one chooses a fundamental distinction between the Open & Closed Innovation Strategies.

In closed innovation projects are usually only been used for various company-specific reasons internally existing capacities and resources for project implementation.

In open innovation projects, however, an attempt is made in addition to internal capacities and as many external resources in a project to integrate in order to conserve as internal resources and to have simultaneously integrate the latest findings in various industries in their own developments.
