Institut Valencià d'Art Modern

The Valencian Institute of Modern Art (IVAM ) is the most important museum of modern art in the city of Valencia. It shows the development of art and photography in the 20th century. The museum offers both permanent collections as well as temporary exhibitions, discussions and courses. It is run by the Ministry of Culture, Education and Sport of the Valencia region.

Building the museum

The museum is divided into two major units, the Centre Julio González, which opened in 1989, and the Sala de la Muralla, available to the public since 1991

  • In the Centre Julio González, there are numerous works of the influential artist to see which are also representative of the art of the 20th century. Graphics, photo art and photo montages are in the foreground. Seven pictures galleries lead artistically through the 20th century. Another focus is the collection of works by the painter Ignacio Pinazo from which the museum has over 100 paintings and over 600 drawings.
  • In the Sala de la Muralla is found apart from impressive old city wall remains of more, ever-changing exhibitions with paintings and photographs of the avant-garde to the seventies. Also on quite contemporary art will be emphasized.

Before the IVAM there are often open-air exhibitions. Overall, the museum has about 2,000 works.
