The Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information ( IQOQI ) is an institution of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (AAS ), was established in November 2003. The Institute, with offices in Innsbruck and Vienna is dedicated to basic research, both theoretical and experimental, in the field of quantum optics and quantum information.

The institute with around 100 employees consists of a department in Innsbruck with four working groups to identify the scientific directors Rainer Blatt, Hans J. Briegel, Rudolf Grimm and Peter Zoller and a department in Vienna with a group led by Anton Zeilinger. The institution was established as an independent research institute with strong links to the Universities of Innsbruck and Vienna. This is a close exchange of students and post-doctoral students and encouraged the integration of members of the Academy Institute be guaranteed in the teaching at the universities.

The working groups with the main research areas:

  • Quantum Optics and Spectroscopy ( Rainer Blatt ): quantum optical experiments and realization of quantum computers based on single trapped ions
  • Quantum Information ( Hans Briegel ): formal theoretical foundations of quantum information
  • Quantum Optics ( Anton Zeilinger ): Experiments with photons and their application in the field of quantum communication
  • Quantum Optics and Quantum Information ( Peter Zoller ): theoretical concepts for the realization and implementation of quantum computers and quantum protocols
