Institute for the Ukrainian Language

Institute of Ukrainian language is a scientific research institute in the Ukrainian capital Kiev, which is devoted to linguistic research.

The aim is to explore the Ukrainian language in their current use and in its history scientifically and documented. The institute was founded in 1991. It belongs, together with many other research institutes as the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The most prominent scientists of the Institute are: Pavlo Hryzenko, Vasyl Nimtschuk, Ivan Vychovanez, Svitlana Ermolenko, Nina Klymenko.

Activities

The central task of the institute is the research of the Ukrainian language as a social, historical, territorial, structural, national and cultural phenomenon. The Institute conducts research in following directions:

  • Social status and functions of the Ukrainian language;
  • Structure of the Ukrainian language (vocabulary, grammar, regulation and codification of the standard language );
  • Social, professional and territorial differentiation of the Ukrainian language;
  • Sources of the origin and historical development of the Ukrainian language;
  • Relations of the Ukrainian language with other Slavic and non- Slavic languages ​​;
  • Formation and dynamics of system names in Ukraine;
  • Development of futures system of disciplines and professional activities.

Structure and Research Areas

The scientific work of the Institute will be held in long-term administrative projects of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. It operates in nine departments:

  • Department of Grammar
  • Department of dialect research
  • Department of History of Language
  • Department of Lexicology and Lexicography
  • Department of Science terminology
  • Department of onomastics
  • Department of Sociolinguistics
  • Department of stylistics and language culture
  • Department of Mathematical Linguistics
