The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Ukrainian Національна академія наук України - Natsional'na akademija nauk Ukrainy "; Russian Национальная академия наук Украины, en: " National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NAS) " ) is a Ukrainian scientific institution in Kiev.

History

The Ukrainian Academy of Sciences was founded in 1918; first president was the geologist Vladimir Ivanovich Vernadsky.

The Academy moved four times their names. First, as the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences from 1918 to 1921 consisting, it was from 1921 to 1936 under the name of All- Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, 1936-1991 Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR known. In 1994 she was given its present name National Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.

The Ukrainian Academy of Sciences was after the Russian the oldest in the former Soviet Union.

The Academy had in the early years three research departments ( history and philology, physics and mathematics, social sciences ) with three institutions, fifteen commissions and the National Library. In 1991, the Institute of Ukrainian language was established. After 2000, the NAS is divided into three sections with thirteen departments and almost 170 institutes and other research institutions with over 13,000 employees.

The Academy has established a number of scientific institutes, mostly from prominent scientists such as mathematicians Dmitry Grawe, Nikolai Krylov, Nikolai Bogolyubov; physicists Kirill Sinelnikov, Lev Shubnikov, Vadim Laschkarjow; the chemist Lew Pissarschewski; the biologists and medical Bogomolez Alexander, Vladimir Filatov; the Orientalists Ahatanhel Krymskyj and the linguist Leonid Bulachowski.
