Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools

The Brothers of the Christian Schools or school brothers, latin Fratres Scholarum Christianorum ( Order code: FSC), are a Catholic religious men which receives primarily lay brothers.

The community was in France earlier Ignorantins, is called in England and North America De la Salle Brothers, Carissimi in Italy and in Poland Braci szolni.

History

St. Jean Baptiste de La Salle founded in 1679 in Reims for the poor a free school in 1681 and took some poor school teacher in his home on. It was founded on May 25, 1684, the Congregation of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. La Salle wrote to 1698 the rules of the order for the new community. The community had its headquarters in Paris in 1688 and since 1705 in Rouen.

As innovations they introduced in their schools instruction in classrooms, as the language of French instead of Latin and banned corporal punishment. They were attacked by the Jansenists and only received on 28 September 1724 by Louis XV. the Royal and on January 26, 1725 by Benedict XIII. the papal approbation.

On August 18, 1792 during the French Revolution were 121 schools, which were attended by about 30,000 students repealed. Many school brothers were imprisoned, and some were executed. On 3 December 1803, the Community of Napoleon was re- admitted.

In the 19th century, the Congregation spread worldwide. During the Kulturkampf she was exiled from 1827 to 1917 from Prussia.

Order

Superior General since 2000, the Costa Rican Álvaro Rodríguez Echeverría. With approximately 70,000 brothers in 80 countries around the world, they are now in the Catholic Church as the largest fraternity.

Seat of the Order is in Via Aurelia 476 in Rome.
