Under director Duarte Pacheco (1927-1932), who was also at the same time Minister of Construction, the current campus Alameda was created in Lisbon and completed the integration of the IS as a faculty of the Technical University of Lisbon.

Between 1952 and 1972 twelve study centers were created in Portugal, three of which were located within the IST ( chemistry, mineralogy and geology, and later electronics). The research was thereby increasingly highlighted, particularly in the building of interdisciplinary complex in which several autonomous research units were housed. In the wake of increased demands and opportunities of IST was created in Oeiras Campus Taguspark of the IST 2001, also to enable closer to the industry, a number of which companies have offices in the technology park Taguspark. In February 2012, was opened as the third campus of the Tecnológico e Nuclear IS the campus area Bobadela / Sacavém in the county Loures. There is now, for research purposes only, the only nuclear reactor in the nuclear- free Portugal.

Since the academic year 2006/07, the IS finally joined the Bologna Process.
