The independent county Loures was established on 26 July 1886 by merging of communities that were spun off from the now defunct circles Olivais and Belém. On 4 October 1910, the republican flag of Portugal was at the town hall of Loures hoisted and the Revolutionary Council ( Portuguese: Junta Revolucionaria ) proclaimed the First Portuguese Republic, the day before the official proclamation.
