History

In the nearby Pedra do Ouro was already in the Copper Age, a settlement. The city, founded in the first half of the 5th century by Alans Alenquer still leads a Alans war dog, a Alaunt, the coat of arms. Royal City law got Alenquer in the year 1212.

Alenquer home to a significant Jewish community. The place is now part of the speech de Judiarias, the route of historic Jewish sites in Portugal.
