Intef the Elder

Antef ( Middle Egyptian: Jnj - jtj.f ), is probably the progenitor of the 11th dynasty based in Thebes. In the top list of Thutmose III. Ach -menu in Karnak he is listed as predecessor Mentuhotep I.. As this king list is, however, not in chronological order, this can only serve as an indication.

Documents

Sources mention his mother Ikui. It is believed in him the father of Mentuhotep I. Otherwise, it is (now in New York) mentioned on a memorial stele of Maat from Dra Abu el- Naga the 11th Dynasty and a dedicated scribe Sesostris I. statue from the Karnak temple (Cairo CG 42005 ). More mentions of one Antef as a stele fragment from Dendera and today located in Strasbourg stele are discussed controversially in their allocation to this Antef.

Antef is " nomarch " ( Iri -pat - hati -a) of Thebes, and his nomination alone in the ancestor list of Thutmose III. in Karnak allows the assumption that he was the progenitor of the 11th dynasty.

The Stele of Antef

The stela CG 20009 from the West Bank should, according to Jürgen von Beckerath be his own grave stele. The Names of the king, as his " favorite " Antef be designated on the stele is not known. Beckerath here suggested a weak ruler of the 8th dynasty.

The text of the stele is after leg:

" An offering which the king gives and Anubis, who is upon his mountain, the ' imut ' ( Jmwt ), the Lord of the Holy Land; an offering to the prince, count, Large head of the Theban nome, the favorite of the king in the southern narrow door opening, the large pillars, which receives its ( the king ) Two Lands alive, the chief priests, the at the Great God, the Lord of heaven, blessed Ini -iti -i ( Jnj - jtj -j).
