Intermembrane space

The intermembrane space between the outer and inner membrane of mitochondria and plastids. In the intermembrane space of mitochondria, some enzymes, such as creatine kinase or adenylate kinase are located. These enzymes convert the energy carrier ATP into other substances to or even synthesizing those from ADP.

Porin, a channel forming transmembrane protein of the outer mitochondrial membrane, ensures that intermediates of the respiratory chain as well as other substances necessary for the function to the intermembrane space happen.
