International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration

The International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration ( IAST ) is the academic standard for playback of Sanskrit in the Latin alphabet. It is based on a transliteration, which was presented in 1912 at the Congress of Orientalists at Athens. IAST allows unambiguous transliteration of Devanagari and other Indian scripts.

In this table, the character inventory of IAST (uppercase and lowercase) with their Devanagari counterparts as well as the pronunciation in IPA Sanskrit or Hindi is listed in traditional order.

Transliteration for Indian writings

In the literature can be found as an extension of the IAST previously used the phonetic notation according NLAC ( standard for Romanization of Indian scriptures according to the Indian National Library ).

ISO 15919 is based on IAST standard, the additional letters of Indian writings contains that do not occur in Sanskrit.
